Talbott "T-Bag" Guthrie
Kentucky Thoroughbred -"winning by a neck."
Talbott the drummer was born in the early seventies and was raised
listening to 8-track tapes of Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair, John Denver and Led Zeppelin. The first record he found in his parents closet was The
Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour" which he played over and over. He thought "The Fool on the Hill" was written about him. As he grew, so did his musical appitite.Too young to buy his own albums, he listened to anything he could find in his parents house -Abba, E.L.O., Supertramp, and Foghat were, for some reason, in heavy rotation during these years. The first album he ever purchased after Sesame Street Fever, was Chic Le Freak. His journey had officially begun.
Having older sisters allowed him to absorb music that might have been difficult to find for a young boy his age. Rick James, Blowfly, Zapp, and Bob Marley were L.P.'s he found in his sister's rooms. Around this time he recieved his first radio which was never turned off, EVER. The King Biscuit Flour Hour was a late night treat. WQMF in Louisville, KY. is still pumping out the best classic rock today. "I remember when Loverboy and Saga were on everyday." Turn Me Loose was an early favorite of his.
It was around this time, possibly the mid eighties, when his supportive parents gave the unsuspecting rocker his first drum lessons. Making as much noise as possible on his crappy Pearl Kit, the young man began forming bands. One of the first was The Lapinsky Gang (modeled after the James Gang) with some high school buds. Its was through these musical relationships that he discovered James Brown, Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, The Band, and Schooly D. As the years progressed, so did his musical tastes. What started with classic rock, slowly became punk rock, and then new wave, and then The Grateful Dead. By the end of the eighties, Hip Hop had become the new thing, and he absorbed all of it.
After a short stint in college, Talbott emerged in one of Portland's hottest bands, Five Fingers of Funk.
Through the mid and late nineties, the Fingers were a force to be reconed with. His drumming had taken on a whole new volume. During these active years he was introduced to Danny East, and a friendship that trandcends any art form was born. As luck would have it, a musical brotherhood has been created. That creation is the Bad Dates. |
